Il GNGTS è stato istituito col D.P. CNR n.5514 del 22.6.1978 assorbendo la Commissione per la Geofisica mineraria ed applicata ed il Gruppo Grandi Profili Sismici (operante dal 1956, sotto gli auspici della Commissione Sismologica Europea). Dall’origine ha assolto i compiti istitutivi (“promuovere e coordinare attivita’ scientifiche ed applicative”) coordinando le attivita’ della ricerca geofisica per la Terra solida dei diversi Istituti afferenti ai Comitati 02 e 05, e promuovendo iniziative integrali di grande respiro internazionali e nazionali. Dopo la soppressione (1.1.1978) della Commissione Geodetica Italiana, fa parte del GNGTS anche la Geodesia e Scienze affini, e gli afferenti al GNGTS sono oggi circa 1800.
